If you missed the 4th annual XRAY.fm birthday at Mississippi Studios, rest assured that it was an epic night filled with cupcakes, cocktails, amazing performers, and a room full of love for local music and nonprofit radio. Check out the brief recap and photos below, followed by a list of heartfelt thank yous to event sponsors and supporters.
We kicked off the night with DJ Bad Wizard spinning records followed by a panel discussion hosted by XRAY in the Morning‘s Karol Collymore and Emily Gilliland, discussing radio’s role in democracy with XRAY’s on-air mainstay Thom Hartmann. Thom has recently moved back to Portland after many years away, and it was clear from audience questions and enthusiasm that he has made a strong impact on his local fans. We also got quite a few new members and donors during that portion of the evening!
The next portion of the bash featured a stellar lineup of performers, hosted by our charming and hilarious emcees Kirsten Kuppenbender & Erin Jean O’Regan. XRAY.fm DJs spun records throughout the night and between sets, including DJs Pretty Ugly and Eldorado of Ballin’ the Jack as well as DJs Serious Moonlight & Palm Dat of Intuitive Navigation.
The first to dazzle the stage was the new wave/new romantic band The Bedrooms, who played a gorgeous set with hypnotic vocals. Next up was the instrumental psych rock trio Máscaras, featuring XRAY’s own Programming Manager Theo Craig on bass, Papi Fimbres on drums, and Carlos Segovia shredding the guitar. They knocked out a hot-blooded high-energy set which had the audience kicking their respective boots around.
The final performer of the night was up and comer Maarquii, who has just been voted one of the best new bands in Portland. The performance, backed up by longtime collaborator JVNITOR, was 100% pure swagger and hip-hop artistry, complete with backup dancers waacking alongside Maarquii for key numbers and the perfect pop iconic video projections to accompany the set.
It was an epic night for all. Thanks to all the performers and collaborators above for celebrating with us. We had a blast!
