As XRAY gets older (we turn THREE this year!), our team is getting bigger! We’re looking for an Underwriting Manager, a Written Content Intern and a News Writing Intern. Now’s your chance to use your powers for good– by supporting independent media!

Underwriting Manager

XRAY.FM is a Portland-based public media organization. Our mission is to put a microphone to the best and most distinctive of Portland; to create a culturally relevant center for ideas, music, and creativity in service of a more open media and a more just community. We operate a 24/7 radio broadcast on 107.1FM, 91.1FM, online at http://www.xray.fm, and very recently also on 99.9FM in Vancouver. Our programming includes a variety of talk shows, ranging from politics and public affairs to gardening to trends in the music industry, alongside music of virtually all genres curated by Portland’s most respected DJs. This spring we’ll also launch XRAY TV, a combination of original series, blocks of original and found footage curated by notable Portland artists, filmed talk radio, and music-related coverage produced in partnership with Open Signal.

As a noncommercial media outlet, we do not pay our bills by selling airtime to advertisers. Instead, we rely on listener donations, corporate sponsorships, grants, and fundraising events. We’ve built partnerships with many wonderful local businesses over the past 3 years that have allowed us to continue furthering our mission, and we are now seeking an Underwriting Manager who will help us continue connecting with businesses that want to support local independent media.

We need someone who is motivated to grow and diversify XRAY.FM’s sponsorship department, and is knowledgeable about our mission and activities as an independent media organization. It will help to be familiar with XRAY’s branding, music and talk programming, listener base, and market positioning, since a big part of the job is matchmaking between potential sponsors and our events and programming. Having thick skin will help, because you will be told no. A lot. Because we’re a small nonprofit, XRAY team members often go beyond official duties to support organization activities. (For example, our Executive Director co-hosts our morning drive-time program, our Development Manager also does bookkeeping and HR, and our Broadcast Operations team lead also helps with volunteer placement.)

Here’s a snapshot of the key duties of the Underwriting Manager role:
1. Meet and exceed goals for on-air and event sponsorship by retaining current sponsors and finding new ones. You’ll make cold calls, do sales presentations, send lots of thank you notes, prepare a monthly newsletter, generate and catalogue agreements, create and update sponsor decks, and generally do what it takes to manage our sponsor accounts and maintain positive relationships with our business partners.
2. Work with content and marketing team members to identify opportunities to connect partners. At this stage we can’t promise our sponsors a huge influx of new business, but we can offer membership in a community of businesses with similar values.
3. Handle administrative, customer service, and other sales-related duties. You’ll facilitate payment, keep the database up to date, and oversee a tracking system that ensures our sponsors receive the correct amount of on-air mentions.
4. Work with Carts Manager to ensure on-air sponsor spots are creative, FCC-compliant, and programmed correctly.
5. Coordinate communications among a small team, including volunteers, to ensure underwriting department runs smoothly.
6. Participate in other fundraising activities, including radio and TV on-air fundraising appeals.

Desired Skills and Experience:
1. Professional experience in (preferably nonprofit) media or related sales with a proven track record of meeting revenue goals.
2. Established network of community and business contacts or the ability to build a network quickly.
3. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Passion for public media.
5. Willingness to put yourself out there, even when rejection is likely.
6. Ability to stay calm amidst chaos and deadlines.
7. Keen eye for details and a knack for organization.
8. Familiarity with Audacity, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator a plus.

Development Manager.

Supervises:
Carts Manager. Staff and volunteers who help secure underwriting contracts and event sponsorship.

Compensation:
Working at XRAY does not make anyone rich (for now…and probably not for the foreseeable future). But you will get to be part of a dynamic and passionate team and have ample opportunities for professional growth and development.

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter that describes your relevant experience and interest in working for XRAY to Amanda Brockman at jobs@xray.fm.
