Hi everybody and welcome to Blogs From Under The Floorboard (though I promise not to begin every blog post that way). As more or less a prose partner to my Friday night show on XRAY FM, Songs From Under The Floorboard, my goal with this column is to bring wider exposure to the insatiably expanding, rudely thriving, every-vital post-punk/darkwave/synth pop scene here in Portland and the Pacific Northwest, a scene that otherwise goes woefully under-reported in the local media, alt. or otherwise.
When a show such as last Monday night’s extravaganza at Holocene featuring Captured Tracks recording sensation The Soft Moon (carrying through with a tour after the one supporting Killing Joke was, again, cancelled), rising LA firebrands Sextile – signed to Felte Records – and the (woo-hoo!!) reformed Portland band We Are Like The Spider (the first band ever interviewed on SFUTF, back in 2012) somehow doesn’t even merit a mention in either Willamette Week or the Mercury, never mind the Oregonian, something is dreadfully amiss. So Blogs From Under The Floorboard (lovingly shortened to BFUTF) will by my further attempt to shine a light on a community that has, until now, labored gamely in the shadows, operating under the assumption that that’s just the way it is.
Quick interviews, previews and/or reviews of live shows, records you should buy now, once a month your faithful correspondent will do what he can to help you not miss out on what is, in fact, another cultural juggernaut for which this coveted corner of the world we all inhabit is also widely envied.
For now, if I may suggest, consider this show at the Black Water featuring up-and-coming Smoke Rings headlining, and oh yeah, keep in mind the imminent approach of a little local festival called Out From The Shadows II coming your way (check that out here) where local bands such as Vice Device, Shadowhouse, Arctic Flowers, Spirit Host, Warm Hands, Soft Kill, The (mighty) Prids, and LUNCH will be joined by bands from all across the country (including Annex from Texas, Shadow Age from Virginia, Forever Grey from Michigan, Ghost Noise – and a host of others – from LA, In Letter Form from San Francisco, Das Fluff from London (!) and many others), coming your way March 31st-April 2nd.
Stay, forever, tuned…
